Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
  • The minimum age for most opportunities to volunteer is 13 years old. We do have exceptions, though, and those are noted on the individual opportunity pages.
  • Youth volunteers ages 13-15 years old MUST be accompanied by an adult 21+. All youth under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian signature (electronic waiver upon sign-up).

Transport volunteers need a vehicle and valid license/registration/insurance. All of our other opportunities welcome all skill levels.

Our volunteer opportunities are diverse. You can do a rescue run or cook meals, sort through donated foods or pack Community Supported Nutrition boxes, transport rescued food, and so much more! We’re always adding new ways to get involved and have something for everyone. Explore our open opportunities, and let us know if you have any questions.

We have regular Volunteer Opportunities Monday through Friday and Sundays. Shifts vary from 1 to 3 hours, and some days offer multiple shifts.

As frequently as you’d like. Join us once a year, twice a month, or every week – however much time you can give will have a lasting impact on the community.

  1. To create an account click the sign up button at the top of the opportunity you’d like to join (Kitchen Shifts, Sorting & Packing Shifts, Transport Shifts, etc.). Don’t worry if you plan to sign up for more than one opportunity, you can always find and add those later. Accounts must be in the name of the person who is volunteering.
  2. You can sign up for any opportunity to join our organization even if you aren’t ready to sign up for a shift!
  3. Account creation must be done from a desktop or laptop computer —or from your web browser on your phone, it is NOT possible to create an account on the Bloomerang Volunteer Mobile app.
  4. To learn more please review our Volunteer Resources for additional information and training videos.

All accounts must be in the name of the person who is volunteering—and every volunteer needs their own account.

This can be done in a separate account using two unique email addresses -or- by the process below:

  • To sign up multiple people using one email address, you will first register and create an account with the primary person. Ex, JaneDoe@email.com, following all sign up steps.
  • Then, register the youth or additional family members you wish to use the same email address by adding “+FirstName” after the first half of the email. Ex, JaneDoe+YouthFirstName@email.com
  • Email protocol will ignore anything after the “+” within the email address, this allows for multiple accounts with only one actual email address.
  • All communications will go to the primary email.

Life happens! We understand you may have last minute commitments come up. However, it’s easy for you to delete and add shifts using your Bloomerang Volunteer Profile—if you need help please review the Volunteer Resource videos here.

***If you’re a transportation volunteer and need to cancel the same day as your shift—please call or text Melissa at 845-723-1309

Group volunteering is a fun way to give back, and we love the joy that helping cook meals, sort groceries, or package food brings to others! However, we cannot fulfill every request due to our regular programming, staff, and facility size. We work hard to accommodate as many groups as possible and ensure these experiences are meaningful for the group and impactful at our organization.

Though we wish we could supply food to everyone in need, Second Chance Foods cannot provide meals or groceries directly to individuals. Our solution is to collaborate with existing programs in the community and supplement their food with our meals and groceries. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, please refer to our resource page here for our partnerships and local options.
